An issue for many individuals in South Africa is that poverty restricts them from being able to gain access to basic needs. The Retrade Project provides traders with a ‘value-for-value’ system though the exchange of recyclable goods for basic essentials such as food, toiletries and clothing.
We aim to empower those in need by promoting worth and dignity to all. Our development model encourages work ethic, savings, responsibility and self-management.
Our volunteers assist traders by assessing the recyclable materials, assigning credit for the recyclables and then helping individuals ‘purchase goods’ in the Trade Store – a small shop set up on the premises which stocks basic essentials such as food, toiletries, coats, blankets and clothing.
The Trade Store is primarily stocked by donations from individuals but has also included businesses, friends of the project and the wider community. All recyclable materials are collected by a local recycling company and all profits attained are used to purchase new stock for the store.
