Plastic pollution amidst the pandemic

Personal protective equipment, more simply known as PPE, includes protective items such as surgical gloves, surgical or single-use masks, and face shields. These items are made from different types of plastics that are designed specifically for the purpose of protection from infectious diseases which are spread through contact with bodily fluids or inhalation (breathing in droplets from an infected person’s sneeze or cough). A large proportion of PPE is single-use and therefore a significant percentage is discarded after using the item once, increasing the chances for inappropriate disposal.

No one imagined the devastation and global shutdown of economies and businesses, sectors and life as we knew it would be altered forever. Leave no Trace: Travel with The Environment in Mind

I grew up traveling, quite literally, traveling in a car and sleeping in a tent. My family traveled almost the entire way around the wilderness that is Southern Africa, with two small children in tow. My brother and I learnt what plants to eat, how to track animals and how to survive in the actual wild, if we ever had to. That's exactly what it was; the wild. We would travel for weeks without seeing another human for the entire time.

An eco-friendly South African Christmas

Christmas is a magical time of year where families gather around to share in the spirit of the season- eating, drinking and being merry. For so long we have fully embraced the concept of a traditional white Christmas- we deck out our houses in plastic pine trees adorned with colourful tinsel, twinkling lights and mismatched trinkets collected over numerous years.

Celebrating 2019

2019! Wow, what a full and wonderful year it has been! As I reflect on the past 11 months I am reminded of so many impactful events - moments of success, growth and connection while also experiencing struggle, failure and sharp learning curves. It is what makes life truly beautiful, however, and we are grateful for all that we have had the great privilege of witnessing this past year.

Why are Partnerships Vital in the Green Movement?

The Retrade project has benefited greatly from collaborative partnerships over the last 5 years, it was a change in perspective when we realised that we didn’t need to pioneer the green agenda alone but that there were wonderful people from around South Africa who were just as passionate and eager to not only actively engage with us but were ready to action change.
